Last updated October 9, 2026. These are the terms for the Alex beta.
Who can use Alex
You must be 18 or older to sign up for Alex or to use it in a group. During the beta, Alex works only with US and Canada phone numbers.
Alex is a bot
Alex is an AI, not a person. It can be wrong, miss context, or misread a thread. Check anything important yourself, and don't rely on Alex for medical, legal, financial, or emergency help. In an emergency, call 911.
Group messages are stored
When Alex is in a group, it stores the group's messages so it can sum things up and keep track of decisions. Alex posts a short notice the first time it speaks in a group saying exactly this. Anyone in a group with Alex can talk to it there without signing up, so only add Alex to groups where people are fine with a bot reading along.
How long we keep things

Anyone in a group is in control
There are no admins. Anyone in a group can text mute to pause Alex, unmute to bring it back, forget this group to delete what it has stored, or Alex, leave to make it go silent for good. Anyone can also remove Alex's number from the group. Alex never adds, removes, or renames anyone. It never starts a chat on its own, except one welcome and a few tips by text to people who texted it, signed up, or posted in a group with it. Text stop to end those.
Your account
Your phone number is your account. We sign you in with a code we text to that number, so keep your phone secure. If your number changes hands, reach us at textalex.com. If you use iMessage from an Apple ID email with no phone number, Alex can still talk with you, but signing up here needs a phone number.
If you connect Google, you can disconnect anytime; disconnecting removes Alex's access and deletes what Alex stored from your Google account.
Your Alex number
Alex runs on several phone numbers. Text (650) 456-2738 and we send back the one that is yours (it's free). Add that number to your groups. We keep which number is yours so Alex answers you from it.
Fair use
Don't use Alex to harass anyone, send spam, or break the law. Don't try to make Alex speak or vote for someone else; it only counts each person's own messages. We may stop Alex from working in a group or for an account that misuses it.
Texting costs
Your carrier's message and data rates may apply. In a green-bubble SMS group, each person's carrier may charge for group texts, including Alex's replies.
Beta, no warranties
Alex is a beta. It is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind. It may change, slow down, or stop working at any time. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss that comes from using Alex or relying on what it says.
Changes
We may update these terms as Alex grows. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page.
